Organogenesis: Drosophila goes gonadal
In many animals, germ cells migrate to the gonad to assemble into a functional organ. Recent work in Drosophila has built a picture of the gene activities that specify the gonad and allow it to attract germ cells, and has led to the identification of a gene, columbus, that may encode the attractive factor.
متن کاملTargeted gene replacement in Drosophila goes the distance.
In this commentary, K. Nicole Crown and Jeff Sekelsky examine new methods for gene targeting in Drosophila. These methods, which allow for rapid replacement of large regions adjacent to existing transgenic insertions, are described in two articles published in this month’s GENETICS: “Long-Range Targeted Manipulation of the Drosophila Genome by SiteSpecific Integration and Recombinational Resolu...
متن کاملGonadal dysgenesis determinants in a natural population of Drosophila melanogaster.
Three populations of Drosophila melanogaster from northern California were surveyed for the ability to produce and resist gonadal dysgenesis in the P-M system of hybrid dysgenesis. Males from all three populations produced low to moderate levels of gonadal dysgenesis in crosses to Oregon-R M females. Most females had the P cytotype, but the M cytotype occurred occasionally. The three population...

Live imaging of developmental gene expression in Drosophila embryos opens up exciting new prospects for understanding gene regulation during development.
متن کاملOlfactory information processing in the Drosophila antennal lobe: anything goes?
When an animal smells an odor, olfactory sensory neurons generate an activity pattern across olfactory glomeruli of the first sensory neuropil, the insect antennal lobe or the vertebrate olfactory bulb. Here, several networks of local neurons interact with sensory neurons and with output neurons--insect projection neurons, or vertebrate mitral/tufted cells. The extent and form of information pr...
